Parsing the Prop 8 Map

When a state like South Dakota outlaws abortion or a state like Vermont legalizes gay marriage, it’s because most voters in that state agree on that position. But when California makes a decision on a major cultural issue, it’s a proxy for the nation.
Twelve percent of Americans live in California, and the state has [...]

California Electoral Map: Then and Now

Can you guess which election this map is from?
Here’s a hint.  In the Almanac of American Politics, Michael Barone writes, “Once upon a time, people used to analyze California politics by distinguishing between Northern California and Southern California. Northern California—the Central Valley and the North Coast as well as the San Francisco Bay Area—tended to [...]

McCain Campaigns in Unfamiliar Areas

As a Navy man, maybe it’s his nature to chart unfamiliar waters.  “McCain is planning to speak in inner cities, heavily African-American sections of the South, and poor sections of Appalachia,” reports Slate’s John Dickerson, adding that these are all heavily Democratic areas.
Dickerson is skeptical that McCain can win these voters, but he leaves the [...]

Obama Won the Facebook Primary, Lost Silicon Valley

CNET’s Declan McCullagh reports this interesting byte of information:

Obama, by comparison, won only 39.3 percent. That’s a remarkable margin of 16 percentage points. It’s far more than the 9.5-point margin that Clinton [...]

It’s been a busy week, but with the dust settled from Super Tuesday, we now have a clear picture of who won.
On the Democratic side, Barack Obama took 14 states to Hillary Clinton’s eight, although Hillary prevailed in more populous states like California and New York. The result was a near-tie: Hillary won 50.2 [...]

The Times Looks at Three Key States

The Times’ examines New Jersey, Missouri and California.
On the Dem side, I expect Hillary Clinton to win New Jersey based on the backs of the Carmello Soprano vote; Hillary to win Missouri by a hair; and Hillary to take about 51 to 54 percent in California, but for the delegates to be split.
On the GOP [...]
