With about 15% of the precincts reporting, Obama is winning about half of the conservative, rural counties of southern Indiana where Bush rolled in 2004. He’s only losing 51-48% statewide and — get this — Indianapolis, Bloomington (U of Indiana) and Lake County (Gary) haven’t reported yet.
I thought this comment from one of my posts about Indiana was telling. Reader “A-gu” said:
I’m born and raised in Southern Indiana (now out of country) and I would have thought the same thing as you did. My Dem-leaning biological father was upset when my sister married a black man. My grandfather is an openly racist Republican. My other grandfather hasn’t voted for a Dem in decades.
And all three will be voting for Obama. It blows my mind.
UPDATE: J-Mart has more:
Clinton is in north-central Indiana, Pike in in far southern portion of the state. Both are reporting from all their precincts.
Clinton County, 2004: Bush 71, Kerry 28
Clinton County, 2008: McCain 56, Obama 43
Pike County, 2004: Bush 60, Kerry 39
Pike County, 2008: McCain 53, Obama 45
ALSO: Add in Cass County, in northern Indiana where 100% of precincts are now reporting.
Cass County, 2004: Bush 68, Kerry 31
Cass County, 2008: McCain 54, Obama 45
