I think that in 1776 ALL the states had legal slavery so should not some of those Northern states apologize also? After all, many salves were brought to the US on ships from New York and Massachusettes.
In his own speeches, Abraham Lincoln was alwasy careful not to blame the South for slavery, but to admit it was a joint enterprise.

Why should any of us apologize for slavery? We didn’t do it. All those people are dead. Has anyone thanked the Union for freeing the slaves? Has Africa apologized for slavery? African participated in the capture of native Africans and selling them off as slaves. Is anyone going to apologize to the Irish for the Britsh abuses. Should the Italians apologize to the Christians for centuries of persecution? Has anyone apologized to the American Indians? What’s with all the apologizing?
